Four Best Tips for Surviving Menopause

This is a guest post by Roxanne Jones.

You just can’t avoid the media hype about menopause. Nearly everywhere you look there’s a new skin cream, energy supplement, hair-replacement procedure or intimacy- enhancement product. And with boomers getting older, the hype isn’t likely to go away anytime soon. But when it comes down to it, it’s all about attitude. You can take the “glass half empty” approach, but why would you? After all, we’re living longer all the time. Remember how your grandmother seemed old at 55? Nowadays, 55-year-old women not only look younger, but they’re also more active, more vibrant, more beautiful, and more sure of themselves than ever before. Follow a few easy tips to look and feel your best during your menopause years.

Step 1:

This one’s easy—take care of yourself. If you’re experiencing uncomfortable symptoms, talk to your doctor about how to cope with the physical and emotional aspects of menopause. With changing hormone levels come a variety of symptoms, and they can vary like crazy from one person to the next.  You can’t look your best without feeling your best. Let your doctor recommend ways to cope with how your body is changing.

Step 2:

Take time for yourself. Most women spend the majority of their younger years taking care of others, whether it’s a husband or significant other, children, the house, your job or even pets. When you reach menopause age, it’s time to take care of you for a change. Treat yourself to whatever makes you feel the most beautiful: have your nails done, get a new haircut, try a Swedish massage. Think about what would make you feel younger and sexier, then do it.

Step 3:

Try a little romance. Schedule a date night with your husband or partner. Nothing will make you feel more like a menopause masterpiece than the attention of your special someone. Don’t just go out to the same old restaurant. Instead, plan a special evening and make it something out of the ordinary: go out to a local drive-in for a burger, fries and a shake, and feel like a teenager again; or pick up take-out sushi and a bottle of champagne, then light some candles, spread out some pillows and have an  upscale living room picnic. If you’re single, be adventurous and try an online, over-50 dating site to meet someone new.

Step 4:

Take a spiritual retreat. For most people, this is the time of their lives when spirituality takes on new meaning. Even if you can’t afford a weekend getaway to Sedona or a spiritual retreat in the Rockies, you can still take time for yourself. Have a “no-TV, no-computer, no-cell phone” weekend. Enjoy and relish the quiet and peacefulness. Pamper yourself with healthy foods, long walks and quiet meditation.
Menopause isn’t just about growing older. It’s about feeling more comfortable with who you are than ever before. It’s about finally coming to accept yourself, even with flaws and imperfections, as the wonderful woman you are.

  1. I think you are right that women who are nearing to menopausal stage need time for themselves so that they can accept the fact and they can adjust to it.
